FIREWISE USA RENEWS MONTE SERENO’S APPLICATION AS AN APPROVED COMMUNITY FOR 2018/19

The Firewise USA program, sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), encourages local, neighborhood solutions to promoting safety by involving homeowners in taking individual responsibility for reducing the risk of loss to life and property from wildfires.  Monte Sereno has been a Firewise USA community since 2014, one of among 1402 communities in 42 states, and one of only 22 communities in New Mexico.  The Firewise program teaches residents how to prepare and adapt to living in a wooded urban environment and encourages neighbors to work together and with local agencies to take action now to prevent losses.  In recent years the community has reduced the risk of wildfire on hillsides, planted varieties of shrubs and trees more resilient to wildfire around their homes, and encouraged learning about the joy and risk of living in a naturally wooded environment, all consistent with the community’s guidelines to maintain an environment of natural beauty and majesty in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo mountains.
